Better by Atul Gawande

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very insightful book by the doctor.

The doctor takes us to the interior of India where other doctors are fighting to eradicate polio. He highlights how with meagre infrastructure the Indian health providers manage to find and inoculate the vast populace in rural areas.

He spends a lot of time in stating how doctors do not disinfect themselves due to sheer laziness even after so many years of discovery of importance of disinfection of doctors. He illustrates how important this is even if seems difficult or too trivial to carry on. He says he is also equally guilty on this front as any other doctor.

He highlights how he found a doctor recommending a chemotherapy for a patient in rural Maharastra (his hometown) whereas in the US they would have expected an oncologist to have been presented and would have overseen the administration of the medicine too.

He gives examples of how being open helps the hospitals retain their patients even after being ranked no high.

There are many other interesting events and observations in the book. Do read and enjoy.
