Saw three movies after a long long time. It was during the long non-stop flight from Newark to Mumbai. The first one was Kahaani featuring Vidya Balan known as Vidya Bagchi in the movie. The movie starts off with a chemical blast in the Kolkatta metro which kills many innocent people. It then switches to two years later where we are shown a heavy Vidya Balan landing at Kolkatta and going directly to a police station to complain about her missing husband. Her name in the movie is Vidya Bagchi and it is mispronounced as Bidya by everybody she meets. She initially tries to correct them, but eventually gives up and starts calling herself as Bidya to avoid frustration. An inspector of police from the station she visits takes interest in her case and helps her gets settled.
At the hotel a young boy brings her hot water everyday for her bath. He is what the hotel manager terms as "running water". It is one of the rare funny moments in the movie.
The whole story revolves around her trying to meet different people trying to piece together the movements of her husband. As she moves around inquiring, she finds that the people whom she inquires with are getting bumped off.
A brusque IB officer comes and asks her to desist from making enquiries and threatens the Inspector asking him not to help her out, but both of them pursue the case.
The climax happens in Durga Puja day and it suffices to say that it ends with a modern day Durga killing a modern day Mahishasura.
Good acting by everybody around. No hamming, almost no melodrama, no songs and a wonderful ending. A must see by my standards.
