The World War is raging and the Nazis are controlling all the germans like the big brother. Not many like this and many have lost near and dear ones. One such german lady who has lost all inclination to live goes to a remote place from her family's summer cabin to commit suicide. All her close family members have died, some of them due to the Nazis, and her ex-boyfriend has beomce an SS officer whom she now detests from the bottom of her heart. In the wilderness, she comes across a unconscious soldier. He is incoherently speaking in English but is wearing a Luftwaffe uniform. Both his legs are fractured. After some contemplation she resolves to save the man just to spite the Nazis.
Being a nurse she can fix up his legs, but she now is challenged finding food to feed him and crutches for him to walk around. As much as she wishes to avoid encountering her ex-boyfriend, she can't as he has eyes everywhere and she does bump into him. Every encounter with old acquaintances comes with its own hazard.
The soldier is in a dilemma. He is unsure if he should believe her and expect succour from her, or if she would turn him over to the Gestapo. Read the book to find out what happens.
A decent read.
