Hussain Zaidi continues to attract me to his books. Every book of his that I have read has been a very good read.
This one traces the motivation for, the planning of and the execution of the bomb blasts that rocked Bombay in 1993 in the aftermath of the demolition of Babri Masjid.
While some of the parts are guess work, most of it has been pieced together based on the confessions and interrogations of the culprits by the police and the CBI. After reading the book it is not difficult to understand why Rakesh Maria is held in such high regard. He conducted the investigation almost single handed and came up with good results.
The hand of Dawood behind it is also highlighted. Although the execution of the blasts went through successfully the ineptitude of Tiger Memom and others involved shows up in how easy it was for the police to get to him very quickly. The ineptitude has been responsible for the troubles his close relatives and friends and accomplices have being going through. He had used vehicles which could be easily traced back to him and to add to it he disappeared early in the morning of the day of blasts.
In hindsight, neither was the demolition of the Babri Masjid a good event, nor was the mini pogrom that followed it nor were the blasts that have happened in the wake of the pogrom. The delicate fabric of India has been rend beyond repair. It is going to be a very difficult task for anybody to create an environment of harmony between the communities. The only action that will help improve the situation is "education", "education" and "education" and this has to be "education" in the real sense, not the partial literacy that is achieved in our schools and educational institutes.
A good read.
