This is a short description of how the Yogis described in Bhagwad Geeta are to be seen in today’s World and in today’s IT world.
Bhagwad Geeta speaks about how humans can outgrow their senses and become one with God by being one of the following Yogis.
Yogis As per Bhagwad Geeta
Gynana Yogis: These are people who contemplate on the self to realize the universal self.
Karma Yogis: These are people work with selflessness with no expectation of the outcome.
Bhakti Yogis: These are people who surrender oneself to God and attribute everything to him.
Yogis in Today’s world
Gynana Yogis: In today’s world a Gynana Yogi knows everything about everything. They can give reasons why Donald Trump became the President of US and how it will impact the world. They can give suggestions on how Narendra Modi could have handled demonetization better or how he could have employed a different means to flush out the black money and curb counterfeit money at the same time. They are the all knowing who keep spouting out suggestions for every problem that plagues the world.
Karma Yogis: These are people who just work for the sake of a salary and do everything with the attitude of “Mera baap ka kya jata hai?” (I.e. what does my father loose) or “Chalta hai!” (It is OK, don’t bother).
Bhakti Yogis: These are sycophants who butter up their higher ups to rise up in career. Be it the coterie around the CxOs who keep saying “Yes Sir” or “Yes Madam” or be it the common man who says “Wow! Narendra Modi he is the saviour for India”, or “Wow! Donald Trump, he is going to transform America back to be the Super Power and the country of dreams for everybody, we are going to be safe from these terrorists”, or “Wow! If Rahul Gandhi takes over as our party president we are going to sweep all the elections anywhere in this country”.
Yogis in the IT World
Gynana Yogis, in the IT industry are people who go about spreading “Gnan” or “Fundas” or in short go about spouting esoteric sounding words and an alphabet soup of Acronyms. These people can draw up a bunch of boxes each with a separate acronym and interconnect them using a bunch of lines.
If you have heard somebody say “We should use IoT, push the data into a Big Data store and use Analytics with AI to provide the users the final results on their Mobile. The application should be deployed on the Cloud and it should enable for Social for the users.” you have seen a Gynana Yogi.
Karma Yogis, in the IT industry these are people who work just for the sake of salary with no botheration of the outcome of their design or code.
If you have seen somebody say “It works perfectly on my machine. If it does not work in production it is should be an infrastructure issue. I don’t think I will bother looking into it, after all I will be released from this project in a few months time and then it is somebody else’s headache.” they you have seen a Karma Yogi.
Bhakti Yogis in the IT industry are people who depend completely on the vendors and expect them to magically ensure that what they develop works as expected by the client.
If you have heard somebody “Let us go with Oracle* stack so that we do not have any problems of performance or stability. We will also have the client take Oracle support so that if there are any issues we will have Oracle’s help to solve any issues” then you have heard a Bhakth speak.
Note: * No offense meant to Oracle, one can replace Oracle with IBM or Microsoft or any of the other IT biggies.
