Maids of Misfortune by M. Louisa Locke

Maids of Misfortune (A Victorian San Francisco Mystery #1)Maids of Misfortune by M. Louisa Locke
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The story is of a widow who is running a boarding house in San Francisco and is trying make her ends meet. She gets a letter from one of the creditors to her husband saying that he had loaned a certain sum to her husband that since she is now in a position to repay him he would be coming to her place to collect the same.

The father of the lady was a stock broker and she had learned how to read the finances of a company and invest in shares. She used this knowledge of hers and posing as a visionary she had a clientele visiting her asking her for investment tips and discussing their family troubles with her.

One of the clients is found dead and she is told that he has left her a portion of his shares that he has invested in, to her in his will. She feels that her troubles with the creditor would be taken care of by what has been left by the client. But it is found that he has been murdered and the shares that he had willed to her are missing.
She decides to jump into the fray and tries to investigate the situation herself. She enrolls herself as a maid in the house of her client. They hire her as one of their earlier maids has just left them and they are looking out for one.

She is helped, reluctantly by the lawyer managing the estate of the client.

How they go about figuring out the killer forms majority of the book. Read it and enjoy it. Don't expect anything great, but nevertheless a good read.
